Feng Shui + Design

REFLECTION

Feng Shui, which means wind-water, is used to site buildings on the land, choose orientation, organize floor plans, and select interior and exterior elements. All with the intent  of increasing the wellbeing of the users.

There are various foundational principles used to shift energy or ‘chi’.  Balancing energy often calls on the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water; through materials or design details.   A wooden table featured on a stone floor, near a plaster hearth, and a water feature outside a window next to the fire, would be a good example.  Placement of specific spaces such as the kitchen far from the front door, prevents positive energy from slipping away. The rule of three, the collection of three symbolize balance, rhythm, and energetics and their interconnection.  Removing clutter is an important detail of Feng Shui.  This can be physical clutter by way of organized closets and well-planned cabinets, or the clutter of how we move through space represented by an unclear path of travel.

When these principles are used as a guide, life can often be more easeful, more synergistic, and more mystical.

The depths of Feng Shui go on and on, this is just scratching the surface.  Some concepts are more relevant than others depending on culture, climate, landscape, and construction. But we can only choose what applies once we understand what it is, how it’s applied, and how it will change our lives.
